Providence 72, Marquette 57

College Basketball The Providence College men’s basketball team opened the Big East Conference with a big statement. The Friars beat #6 Marquette at home 72-57.

The night belonged to Devin Carter, who scored 22 points and was 5-9 from behind the 3-point line.

Ticket Gaines added 18 points — 5-10 from behind the 3.

Josh Oduro added 10 points and 9 rebounds before fouling out with just under three minutes.

One Friar who struggled was Bryce Hopkins, who finished with 11 points and was 0-4 from the 3-point line.

Marquette star and Cumberland-native Tyler Kolek finished with 21 points, but was 7-15 from the field and just 1 assist and 3 turnovers.

The Golden Eagles fall to 9-3 (0-1) and the Friars move to 10-2 (1-0).

Providence led 40-29 at the half and withstood a number of Marquette mini-runs early in the second half.
