UAB extends womens coach Norton through 2025

UAB women's basketball head coach Randy Norton has agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2025 season.

"Coach Norton has taken the women's basketball program to new heights over the last six years," UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram said. "His sustained success allows us to compete for conference championships every year. We are thrilled to extend his contract to the 2025 season and are excited for the continued excellence his program has established on and off the court."

Norton came to Birmingham in 2013 from Missouri where he served as an assistant coach for three seasons.

In six seasons with the Blazers, Norton has compiled a 117-73 overall record, placing him third for most wins in program history.

Over the last two seasons Norton has led the Blazers to 25+ wins and consecutive trips to the WNIT. In 2017-18 the Blazers claimed their first Conference USA regular season title in program history.

UAB has led C-USA in three-point field goal percentage for the last three seasons and led the league in scoring a season ago after averaging 73.3 points per game.

Under Norton's direction several Blazers have ranked Top 50 nationally in multiple offensive categories, including current seniors Miyah Barnes, Rachael Childress and Katelynn Thomas who ranked at the top of Conference USA in assist/turnover ratio, three-point field goals made and field goal percentage.

In addition to his success on the court, Norton has also helped improve the program's standing academically. Last spring the team recorded a 3.47 GPA, making it eight straight semesters the team recorded a GPA above 3.0.

This is Norton's third contract extension since coming to UAB. Most recently, his contract was extended five years after the 2017-18 conference championship winning season through 2023.

"I appreciate the continued support from President Watts, Mark Ingram, the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees and their confidence in me and our program," said Norton. "We have accomplished some great things the last six years and we look forward to setting the bar even higher in the future. Our past and current student-athletes have built a tremendous legacy for our future players. I want to thank my staff who have worked extremely hard in helping us build an amazing program."
