Buffalo extends football coach Leipold through 2024

Buffalo head football coach Lance Leipold has agreed to a new five-year contract.

Leipold's new contract runs through the 2024 season.

"I'd like to first thank President Satish Tripathi and Mark Alnutt for this extension for our staff," Leipold said. "We greatly appreciate the continued support of our administration in our pursuit of MAC championships and bowl appearances."

Since arriving at UB prior to the 2015 season, Leipold has built the Bulls into a consistent winner, including three straight years of bowl eligibility. Buffalo has won 24 games over the last three seasons, the second most of any school in the Mid-American Conference over the same time and the most wins over a three-year span in school history. In addition, Buffalo's winning percentage over the last two seasons (.692) is tops in the MAC.

In only five seasons, Leipold's 31 wins rank fourth in school history. He has more wins at the FBS level than any coach in program history. He led the Bulls to six wins in 2017, 10 in 2018 and eight wins in 2019, marking the first time in over 70 years a UB football team won six or more games in three straight seasons. In fact, Leipold and his staff have produced four of Buffalo's nine 5+ win seasons in 21 years as an FBS program.

Leipold was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 2018 after leading the Bulls to a school-record 10 wins. Under his leadership, quarterback Tyree Jackson was the first Buffalo player to be named MAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2018 and running back Jaret Patterson was just the second UB player to be named MAC Freshman of the Year.

Buffalo had a school-record 12 players named All-MAC in 2019, bringing its total to 37 all-conference players over Leipold's five seasons with the program. The Bulls have also had 33 players named Academic All-MAC under Leipold, including a school-record 11 in 2017. Prior to Leipold's arrival, the Bulls had a total of 27 Academic All-MAC selections.

"I'm very appreciative of Lance Leipold's unwavering commitment and dedication to building a championship caliber football program here at UB," Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt said. "This program has seen outstanding growth and success both on and off the field during his tenure. I'm excited to work with Lance and his staff as we continue this positive trajectory for many years to come."
