GAME NOTES: The Tulane Green Wave and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane will meet this weekend in a Conference USA clash. Tulane carries a six-game losing streak into this clash, and all but one of the losses during the slide have come by double figures. Last weekend, the Green Wave dropped a 41-24 decision to UAB in front of a dejected home crowd. All but one opponent in the last six games have scored at least 35 points, so shaky defense has been a major reason for the run of futility. As for Tulsa, it won its first eight games this season and appeared to be a major contender in Conference USA. Unfortunately, the last two outings have resulted in defeat, including an embarrassing 70-30 setback to Houston on the road last weekend, The Golden Hurricane still have just one league loss and clearly have a postseason game to look forward to, but it is important for the players to stay focused after a pair of setbacks. Tulsa owns a 3-1 series lead over Tulane, and the Golden Hurricane has won all three meetings since the team's have been C-USA rivals.

Despite generating a decent average of 362.2 total ypg, Tulane is only scoring 18.7 ppg. The team is rushing for an average of just 3.8 yards per attempt, and 13 interceptions haven't done much to help the cause. Kevin Moore has taken the majority of snaps for the Green Wave, and he has completed 56.5 percent of his attempts for 1,897 yards with eight touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The ground attack is led by Andre Anderson's 864 yards and seven scores, but he was lost for the season with a shoulder injury a few weeks ago. Jeremy Williams is the best of the team's receivers, as he scored five touchdowns on 27 catches in five games, but he has also been lost for the season because of knee injury. Clearly, the Tulane team that will take the field this weekend is seriously depleted. The Green Wave finished with only 98 rushing yards last weekend against UAB, and while Kevin Moore and Scott Elliott did combine to pass for 263 yards on 17 completions, they threw four costly interceptions.

It is hard to believe that Tulane is yielding 31.3 ppg considering that the team is giving up only 361.4 total ypg. The Green Wave have struggled mightily against the run, allowing 5.2 yards per attempt and 175.3 ypg, and they are permitting 11.3 yards per pass completion. Still, there are plenty of teams in the nation who yield more total yards per game than Tulane, which has 15 takeaways and 20 sacks to its credit. Opponents have been able to make good on 42 percent of their field down conversion attempts against the Green Wave. Corey Sonnier leads the defense with 75 total tackles, 30 more than his closest teammate. Tulane surrendered 426 total yards to UAB last weekend, including 272 rushing yards on 46 attempts. The Green Wave yielded four touchdowns on the ground and were simply pushed around in the contest.

Tulane did rack up 30 points and 501 total yards against Houston last weekend, so on the surface it seems unfair to put any blame on the offense for the loss. Upon closer review, however, the Green Wave turned the ball over five times, and one of the team's three interceptions were returned for a score. David Johnson, the club's starting quarterback, completed 18-of-29 passes for 271 yards and four touchdowns against only one interception, but both Jacob Bower and Michael Such tossed interceptions. Charles Clay, Slick Shelley and Brennan Marion all had touchdown receptions in the clash. Tulsa is averaging a staggering 49.8 ppg and 583.8 total ypg this season, and the offense has scored a total of 65 touchdowns. Johnson has thrown for 37 touchdowns against 11 interceptions, completing 66.2 percent of his passes for 3,254 yards. Brennan caught 35 passes for 962 yards and eight touchdowns, while Shelley has seven scores to his credit. The ground attack, which relies on the contributions of several individuals, accounts for 241.7 ypg.

Houston scored one touchdown on an interception return and another on a kickoff return last weekend against Tulsa, but the Golden Hurricane offense still played horribly. The unit surrendered 32 first downs, 641 total yards and eight touchdowns, including six through the air. The Cougars were able to completed 29-of-42 passes for 461 yards. Mike Bryan had 13 tackles for Tulsa, but the defense seemingly provided no resistance. Opponents are now averaging an even 30.0 ppg against Tulsa after last weekend's debacle. The Golden Hurricane are yielding 413.8 total ypg, including 289.2 passing ypg. They have yielded 36 touchdowns to opposing offenses, and 28 of those scores have come through the air. While Tulsa has intercepted only eight passes despite facing 348 pass attempts, the club has recovered 11 fumbles to go along with a stellar total of 31 sacks.

Tulsa will crush Tulane this weekend, as the Golden Hurricane desperately need a win to get on track. The Green Wave have nothing but pride to play for, and the offense is simply too depleted at this point to pose a serious threat.
