GAME NOTES: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights will try to continue their late season
run when they host the Army Black Knights this Saturday afternoon at Rutgers
Stadium. The Black Knights have had a tough time this season, losing seven of
their 10 contests. The last time Army was on the field the team suffered a
rough, 38-31 setback to Rice. The Black Knights have not enjoyed much success
on the road either, as the team is just 1-3 away from home this season. As for
the Scarlet Knights, they lost five of their first six games this year, but
the team has rebounded in a big way, collecting four consecutive wins,
including a convincing, 49-16 win over South Florida this past Saturday. After
this matchup the Scarlet Knights will close out their regular season schedule
with a home contest against Louisville. In terms of the all-time series
between the two schools, the Scarlet Knights hold a slim 18-16 edge over Army,
and have won the last four meetings.
The Black Knights have relied heavily on their ground attack all season, as
the team is rushing for 257.8 ypg, and out of the 20 touchdowns scored by the
offense, 17 have come on the ground. Overall Army comes into this matchup
averaging a meager 307.9 total ypg, and that has led to a mere 17.4 ppg.
Collin Mooney has been outstanding for the Black Knights, and currently has
1,173 rushing yards and eight scores on the year. Quarterback Chip Bowden has
contributed 483 rushing yards, while Wesley McMahand has chipped in 293 yards.
The last time Army was on the field the team rumbled for 461 yards and four
scores, but despite that, Army still fell to Rice by a seven-point margin.
Mooney was outstanding in the win, rushing for 207 yards and two touchdowns on
8.0 ypc. Bryson Carl added 85 yards on just three carries, while McMahand
contributed 83 yards and one touchdown on eight totes.
The poor offensive production has taken away from the strong defensive effort
by Army. The Black Knights have been tough throughout the season, limiting
teams to just 312.3 total ypg, and just 22.2 ppg. This unit has done a very
impressive job against the run, holding teams to just 121.1 rushing ypg on 3.5
ypc. Unfortunately this unit has been unable to make many big plays, forcing
just 14 turnovers on the year, while also collecting only 17 sacks. In the
recent setback to Rice, the Black Knights were torched through the air, as the
Owls threw for a whooping 384 yards and three scores. Donovan Travis led the
way in the loss with eight tackles, while Frank Scappaticci and Stephen
Anderson both chipped in with seven stops apiece.
The Scarlet Knights have been mediocre at best offensively, as the team is
averaging 355.0 total ypg and that has led to a pedestrian 25.5 ppg. Kordell
Young and Jourdan Brooks have been the top two options out of the backfield
for Rutgers, as Young has rushed for 514 yards and five touchdowns, while
Brooks has contributed 322 yards and five TDs. Mark Teel has been mediocre at
best under center, as the quarterback has thrown for 2,293 yards, but has just
15 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. His main option has been Kenny Britt,
who is currently leading the team with 68 receptions, 994 yards and five
scores. The last time Rutgers was on the field the team dominated the Bulls,
racking up 421 total yards en route to a 49-point performance. Teel torched
the Bulls for 294 yards and three scores through the air, while Britt hauled
in eight receptions for 173 yards and one TD.
While the offense is slowly progressing, the defense has been solid throughout
the season, as Rutgers is limiting opponents to just 335.0 total ypg, and 20.5
ppg. The team has done a tremendous job against the pass, holding teams to
just 194.7 ypg through the air, while surrendering just eight passing scores.
Unfortunately the Scarlet Knights have only forced 13 turnovers on the year,
but the squad has been able to get to the quarterback, collecting 25 sacks on
the year. In the recent matchup with South Florida, the Scarlet Knights
surprisingly allowed 328 yards through the air, but still dominated the Bulls
by a 33-point margin. The defense entered the game with just seven total
takeaways, but against the Bulls the Scarlet Knights forced them into six
miscues. Devin McCourty led the defense with eight tackles, while Ryan
D'Imperio collected six stops to go along with three TFLs.
The Scarlet Knights have been red-hot recently and should have no trouble
getting past Army. Rutgers has too much offensive firepower, and should be
able to post more than enough points against the Black Knights.
