GAME NOTES: Sun Belt Conference action will take place this Saturday when the
UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns host the Arkansas State Red Wolves at Cajun Field.
The Red Wolves are coming off a strong, 37-29 victory over UL-Monroe this past
weekend. It was the fourth win of the season for ASU, which is now 2-0 in Sun
Belt Conference play. In their last eight road games the Red Wolves have
struggled, posting a mere 1-7 ledger. As for the Cajuns, they have won two
consecutive games, including a convincing 59-30 win over North Texas this past
weekend. This is just the second home game of the season for ULL, which has
dropped five of its last seven games at Cajun Field. ULL leads the all-time
series by a slim, 18-17-1 advantage, but the Red Wolves have won two of the
last three meetings, including a convincing, 52-21 win this past season in
Jonesboro.
The Red Wolves have used a balanced offensive attack throughout the season,
and the success for this unit has led to an impressive 35.0 ppg. ASU is
currently averaging 206.5 ypg through the air, while adding another 246.0 ypg
via the run. Derek Lawson and Reggie Arnold have been a dangerous duo in the
backfield, as Lawson currently has 551 yards and three scores, while Arnold
has rumbled for 490 yards and four TDs. Corey Leonard has contributed 316
rushing yards on the year, but the quarterback has also thrown for 1,239 yards
and has 10 touchdowns against only two interceptions. This past weekend
against ULM, the Red Wolves used a heavy dose of their ground game, as the
team rumbled for 262 yards on 6.0 ypc. Lawson paced the team with 104 yards
and one score on 15 totes, while Arnold added 71 yards, also on 15 carries.
Leonard only threw for 129 yards in the contest, but the signal caller was
able to score once on the ground.
The defense has been just as effective, as the unit is limiting teams to just
339.7 total ypg, and a mere 20.5 ppg. The front line for this squad has done a
solid job against the run, limiting opponents to just 121.8 ypg on just 3.5
ypc. The Red Wolves have done an impressive job forcing big plays, as the
defense has collected 16 takeaways, while also recording 16 sacks. Although
ASU surrendered 27 points against ULM, the defense still did a tremendous job
against the run, holding the Warhawks to just 87 yards on just 26 attempts.
The Red Wolves were able to force three turnovers in the win, and also got to
the quarterback on three different occasions. Alex Carrington had a tremendous
showing in the win, as the lineman grabbed eight tackles to go along with one
forced fumble and 2.5 sacks.
The Cajuns come into this matchup with one of the most potent ground games in
the nation, as the team is gashing opposing teams for 332.2 ypg. Overall this
offensive unit is producing a whopping 529.2 total ypg and that has led to an
impressive 37.0 ppg. The main reason for the Cajuns' success on the ground is
due to Tyrell Fenroy, who has rushed for 842 yards and 11 scores in just six
games. Quarterback Michael Desormeaux has also done a terrific job on the
ground, as the signal caller has rushed for 708 rushing yards and five TDs.
Unfortunately the QB has not enjoyed the same success with his arm, as
Desormeaux has thrown for just 1,076 yards and six TDs against five
interceptions. The ground game was on display this past weekend against North
Texas, as ULL pounded the Mean Green for 338 yards on 7.2 ypc. Desormeaux led
the way with 123 yards and one touchdown, while Fenroy added 92 yards and one
score on just 18 totes. However, the most important player was Jason Cherry,
who tallied 85 yards and one TD on the ground, while also grabbing three
passes for 123 yards and three more scores.
Unfortunately the success for the offense has been the downfall for the
defense, as the Cajuns are being abused for 242.3 ypg on the ground. Overall
this unit has been tortured for 458.5 total ypg, and that has led to a
terrible 34.7 ppg. Although the Cajuns walked away with a 29-point win over
North Texas this past weekend, the defense was embarrassed for 528 total
yards, including 361 yards through the air. Thankfully the defense was able to
force three turnovers in the win, and also held the Mean Green to just 5-of-15
on third down attempts. Dwight Bentley led the way for the Cajuns with nine
tackles, one TFL and one fumble.
Arkansas State has been solid against the run, but the Cajuns' ground game is
far too superior for the Red Wolves. Expect Fenroy to continue his tremendous
season, as he runs the Cajuns to another victory.
