GAME NOTES: Two undefeated teams in the Sun Belt Conference will collide this
Saturday when the Troy Trojans host the Florida International Golden Panthers
at Movie Gallery Veteran Stadium. After opening the year with three
consecutive losses, the Golden Panthers have turned the tide, winning three
straight contests, including a 31-21 victory over Middle Tennessee this past
weekend. FIU already has two road win this season, which is more than the
team's total number of victories away from home from 2005 to 2007 (1-18). As
for the Trojans, they snapped a two-game losing skid with a solid, 30-17
victory over Florida Atlantic this past Tuesday. This is just the second home
matchup of the season for Troy, which usually does well at home, posting an
8-2 ledger over the two previous campaigns. In terms of the all-time series
between the two schools on the gridiron, the Trojans have won all four
meetings.
Although the Golden Panthers have won three straight games, the team
has still struggled to find consistency on offense, as the team is producing
just 244.5 total ypg, but that has led to a mediocre 21.2 ppg. The ground game
has been nonexistent, as the Panthers are rushing for only 92.8 ypg behind
just 2.6 ypc. The passing attack has been just as embarrassing, as FIU is
producing just 151.7 ypg via the pass. This past weekend against MT the
Golden Panthers put forth a solid effort however, racking up 335 total yards
en route to a 31-21 victory. Paul McCall did most of the damage, as the
quarterback threw for 223 yards and one touchdown, while also pacing the team
with 53 rushing yards and another score. Unfortunately McCall has not
performed at a high level throughout the season, as the signal caller has
completed just 47.5 percent of his throws for a meager 729 yards. After six
games, McCall has thrown for just six touchdowns against six interceptions.
On the other side of the football the Golden Panthers have been just as
inconsistent, as the team is surrendering 364.8 total ypg, which has led to
24.3 ppg. FIU's defense is being abused for 156.2 ypg on the ground, while
also allowing 208.7 ypg through the air. Surprisingly the defense has forced
16 turnovers on the year, but at the same time the Golden Panthers have
struggled to put pressure on the QB, racking up just eight sacks. In the win
over MT, the Golden Panthers had possibly their best defensive showing of the
season, holding the Blue Raiders to just 243 total yards, including just 72
passing yards. FIU was able to force three turnovers in the victory, and also
held the Blue Raiders to just 5-of-14 on third down attempts.
Unlike their counterpart, the Trojans have a very dangerous and balanced
attack, as the squad is averaging an impressive 425.4 total ypg, which has led
to an equally strong 32.0 ppg. Troy has rumbled for 190.6 ypg on the ground,
while also throwing for a solid 234.8 ypg through the air. DuJuan Harris has
been the main option in the backfield for the Trojans, as the tailback has
gashed opponents for 342 yards and four TDs. Quarterback Jamie Hampton has
added 236 yards and four scores on the ground, but the signal caller has also
thrown for 1,046 yards thus far. Hampton also has nine touchdowns to his name,
but has thrown eight interceptions. In the recent win over FAU, the Trojans
used a heavy dose of its ground game, rushing for 233 yards and three
touchdowns. Hampton led the way with 61 yards and two touchdowns, while Harris
added 60 yards and one score on 18 totes.
On top of the strong offensive play, the Troy defense has also done a solid
job this year, allowing a mediocre 336.6 total ypg, and 23.4 ppg. The Trojans
are being gashed for 151.8 ypg on the ground this year, but the team has
performed well against the pass, limiting teams to just 184.8 ypg. Troy has
forced the big play defensively as well, racking up 13 turnovers, but
pressuring the quarterback has been a different story, as the Trojans
currently have just 10 sacks. Surprisingly the Trojans allowed 283 passing
yards against FAU, but despite the lackluster effort against the pass, the
Trojans still walked away with a 30-17 win. The victory was mainly due to the
team's ability to force three turnovers, while also recording four sacks.
The Golden Panthers have played well over the past few weeks, but the Trojans
have far too much firepower and should be able to grab a solid victory on
their home field.
