GAME NOTES: Two teams looking for their first league win of the season will
collide this Saturday evening at Malone Stadium, as the UL-Monroe Warhawks
will host the North Texas Mean Green in a Sun Belt Conference battle. It has
been a very rough season for the Mean Green, as the team is coming off its
seventh straight loss dating back to last season. North Texas was embarrassed
this past weekend, falling to UL-Lafayette, 59-30. The Mean Green have been
terrible on the road, losing 10 consecutive games away from home dating back
to the 2006 campaign. As for the Warhawks, they have lost three consecutive
games, including a tough, 37-29 setback to Arkansas State this past Saturday.
ULM fell to 1-5 on the season, and that lone win was a 37-15 victory over
Alabama A&M. The Warhawks were 4-3 in league action this past season, but thus
far ULM has dropped both its league matchups this year. With respect to the
all-time series on the gridiron, the two schools have won 12 games apiece.
Last year the Mean Green evened the series with a solid, 31-21 victory over
the Warhawks.
The Mean Green have done very little offensively, as the team is currently
producing just 370.3 total ypg, which has led to a mere 15.8 ppg. This
offensive unit has totaled just 11 touchdowns thus far, while committing 16
turnovers. The main asset for North Texas has been its passing attack, which
is averaging 238.2 ypg. Giovanni Vizza has been inconsistent at times, but has
completed 63.4 percent of his throws, with six touchdowns against seven
interceptions. Casey Fitzgerald has been the best player for the Mean Green,
as the wideout is leading the squad with 55 receptions, 628 yards and two TDs.
The Mean Green actually put forth a strong effort this past weekend against
ULL, scoring 30 points, but it was not nearly enough for the team to grab a
win. North Texas relied heavily on the pass, as the team threw for 361 yards
in the contest. Vizza, who took every snap in the game, also tossed two
touchdowns for North Texas, while Fitzgerald was once again the main target,
grabbing 14 passes for 231 yards and one score.
Defensively the Mean Green have struggled big time, as this unit is being
abused for 481.7 total ypg, and that has led to an atrocious 53.3 ppg. The
team has had its problems against the run and pass, as opponents are rumbling
for 189.7 ypg, while throwing for another 292.0 ypg. The defense has been
unable to make big plays, and comes into this game with just five takeaways
and four sacks. North Texas' defensive woes were on full display this past
weekend, as the team was abused by UL-Lafayette for 590 total yards and 59
points. The Mean Green's front line was gashed throughout the contest, as ULL
rumbled for 338 yards and four rushing TDs against North Texas. Darian
Williams racked up 12 tackles in the loss for North Texas, while Tobe Nwigwe
collected 11 stops to go along with one fumble recovery and one interception.
The Warhawks have been mediocre on offense this season, as the team is posting
just 23.0 ppg. The ground game is only averaging 131.8 ypg on the year, and
the passing attack is not much better, as ULM is throwing for only 197.7 ypg.
Pacing the rushing attack has been Frank Goodin, who currently has 346 yards
and three touchdowns. Kinsmon Lancaster has rumbled for 201 yards thus far,
but the quarterback has also thrown for 1,140 yards and has eight touchdowns
against just two interceptions. ULM was able to score 27 points this past
weekend against Arkansas State, but the team was still unable to grab a win.
The team racked up 396 total yards, but the majority of the success came from
the passing attack, as ULM finished with 309 yards. Lancaster was the star of
the show for the Warhawks in the loss, as the signal caller finished with 303
yards and three touchdowns. However, Lancaster also tossed an interception and
was sacked four times.
Where the Warhawks have struggled is on the defensive side of the football, as
the squad is being abused for 469.7 total ypg, which has led to a whopping
30.3 ppg. The main problem has come against the run, as the team is being
pounded for 261.8 ypg, and out of the 19 touchdowns allowed by this unit, 14
have come via the run. The Warhawks struggles against the run continued this
past weekend, as the unit was gashed by Arkansas State for 262 yards on 6.0
ypc. UL-Monroe surrendered 391 total yards to ASU, and did not record a
turnover in the contest, while grabbing just two sacks. Cardia Jackson was
clearly the top player on the field for ULM, as the linebacker grabbed 14
tackles to go along with two sacks.
Neither team has performed well defensively, so expect a high scoring affair.
North Texas has not won in its last 10 road games, and that trend should
continue this weekend.
