GAME NOTES: Two of the three undefeated teams in the West Division of the Mid-
American Conference will clash this weekend, as the Central Michigan Chippewas
will host the Western Michigan Broncos in a key conference showdown. After
starting the season with a loss to Nebraska, the Broncos have been
unstoppable, winning six consecutive games, including a thrilling, 34-28
overtime win over Buffalo this past weekend. The Broncos have done a
tremendous job on the road this season, and come into this matchup with a
three-game winning streak away from home. As for the Chippewas, they are
coming off their second straight win, defeating Temple, 24-14, this past
weekend. CMU has been the top team in the MAC over the past two seasons, and
comes into this contest with an 18-2 ledger against league foes since the
start of the 2006 campaign. The Broncos lead the all-time series with a
43-33-2 mark, and have won three of the last four contests against the
Chippewas.
The Broncos have been an offensive juggernaut, averaging 424.4 total ypg,
which has led to 32.4 ppg. The majority of the team's success has come through
the air, as WMU is producing 296.0 ypg via the pass. Out of the team's 29
offensive touchdowns, the Broncos have scored 23 through the air. Tim Hiller
has been the top quarterback in the MAC this season, as the signal caller has
thrown for 2,046 yards, while completing 68.2 percent of his passes. Hiller
has tossed 23 TDs on the year against only five interceptions. Jamarko Simmons
has been the main target downfield for Hiller, as the wideout is leading the
team in receptions (53), yards (584), and touchdowns (6). The Broncos' success
through the air continued this past weekend in the overtime victory over
Buffalo, as Hiller set school records for 42 completions and 63 attempts in
the contest. The quarterback finished the game with 345 yards and four
touchdowns, one of which went to Simmons, who finished with 10 receptions and
103 yards. Schneider Julien also had a solid showing, catching 12 balls for
111 yards and one TD.
The Broncos have not been overpowering defensively, but the squad has done
just enough to keep WMU in the win column. After seven games, the Broncos are
surrendering 357.4 total ypg, and that has led to 22.2 ppg. Western Michigan
has only forced 11 turnovers on the season, but the defense has done a solid
job pressuring the quarterback, racking up 15 sacks thus far. Although the
Broncos surrendered 28 points against Buffalo this past weekend, the defense
held the Bulls to 322 total yards, and that includes just 164 yards through
the air. Louis Delmas led the defense with eight tackles and also grabbed an
interception, while Harrison Porter collected seven stops in the win.
Surprisingly the Chippewa offense has been contained this year, as the squad
is currently producing 25.8 ppg. Central Michigan is averaging an impressive
252.2 ypg through the air, but the ground attack has struggled, as the team is
rushing for only 118.8 ypg on just 3.3 ypc. Dan LeFevour has found it tougher
to post points this season, as the quarterback has thrown for just nine
touchdowns against three interceptions. LeFevour has passed for 1,377 yards
thus far, and the signal caller is also leading the team on the ground with
304 yards, to go along with three scores. Shockingly the Chippewas had a tough
time against Temple's defense this past weekend, as the squad collected just
297 total yards, including just 55 yards on 40 carries (1.4 ypc). LeFevour
completed 10-of-11 throws in the victory for 106 yards and two scores, but
exited the game early, leaving the pressure to bring home the win to backup
Brian Brunner. Brunner did not disappoint, throwing for 136 yards and one TD.
Bryan Anderson grabbed eight balls for 149 yards and one touchdown for CMU,
while Antonio Brown added three catches for 33 yards and two scores.
The defense for CMU has also stumbled onto some problems, mainly against the
pass, as opponents are throwing for 258.2 yards against the Chippewas. Overall
the defense for Central Michigan is allowing 388.3 total ypg, and that has led
to 27.8 ppg. This unit has made some big plays thus far, collecting just 10
takeaways and 14 sacks. Fortunately the Chippewas had one of their best
showings of the year defensively, limiting the Owls to just 301 total yards
and 14 points this past weekend. The defense forced four turnovers in the
contest, and also got to the quarterback on four different occasions. Sean
Murnane has a strong performance, racking up nine tackles to go along with
three TFLs. Frank Zombo added seven stops in the win, and also recorded a
team-high four TFLs.
The Chippewas have been the top team in the conference for the past two years,
and even though the team is home for this matchup, look for Western Michigan
to come away with an impressive road win over the defending MAC champs.
