Texas A&M at Texas Tech
(Saturday, October 24th)
Final Score: Texas A&M 52, (21) Texas Tech 30
Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - The duo of Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael
gashed the Texas Tech defense for a combined 252 rushing yards and five
touchdowns on the ground, as Texas A&M recorded a thorough 52-30 road victory
over the 21st-ranked Red Raiders in Big 12 action.
Gray ended with 131 yards and three scores on 25 carries -- also adding a TD
reception -- while Michael needed 22 carries to net 121 yards and two TDs for
the Aggies (4-3, 1-2 Big 12), who snapped a three-game skid that included an
embarrassing 62-14 loss to Kansas State last week.
"They're two different types of runners, and they did a very good job, but
they wouldn't have done it without that offensive line. The offensive line did
an excellent job today," Aggies head coach Mike Sherman said of his running
backs.
Jerrod Johnson added 71 rushing yards and a score on 10 carries, and threw for
238 yards and another touchdown on 19-of-28 efficiency to help Texas A&M snap
a four-game losing streak to Texas Tech (5-3, 2-2), which hadn't lost a home
game against the Aggies since 1993.
Taylor Potts, playing in his first game since suffering a concussion on
October 3, finished with 310 yards and two touchdowns on 25-of-36 throws but
was picked off twice and lost a fumble in the loss.
"I don't think Potts ever got in a rhythm," Red Raiders head coach Mike Leach
said. "I don't know if he tried to make too much happen. But, you know, he
just looked slow and statue-like."
Alex Torres ged 128 yards and a touchdown on eight catches in defeat.
The Red Raiders, who came into the game ranked second in the nation in scoring
offense (41.43 ppg) were ranked for the first time after their third straight
win last week, a convincing 31-10 decision over then-No. 15 Nebraska.
Uzoma Nwachukwu's 41-yard reception early in the second quarter set up Gray's
three-yard TD jaunt that tied the game, 14-14.
Harrison Jeffers was stuffed on fourth down in Texas A&M territory later on,
and a defensive pass interference prolonged the Aggies' next drive. Michael
needed four plays from inside the three to punch it in, but did so from the
one on fourth down for the go-ahead score at the 6:50 mark.
After a rare three-and-out from the Raiders, Gray capped an 11-play, 73-yard
march with a one-yard plunge for a 28-14 A&M lead at halftime.
The Aggies continued to ride the wave of their huge second quarter, as Michael
rushed for a 44-yard TD just three minutes into the third.
Potts' fumble in his own territory led to Randy Bullock's 22-yard field goal,
making it 38-14 with 6:19 remaining in the third.
Seth Doege relieved Potts under center but the Raiders continued to struggle
after penetrating enemy territory, eventually turning the ball over on downs
at the Texas A&M 20.
A little later, Eric Stephens' seven-yard touchdown run, coupled with Edward
Britton's two-point conversion grab from Doege, made it a two-possession game,
38-22, heading to the fourth.
Texas Tech fumbled on its next possession, and Johnson's 21-yard TD run with
8:38 to play padded the lead.
Baron Batch rushed for a one-yard TD 3:25 later. Texas Tech again converted
for two points on a Detron Lewis grab, but Gray's third score of the game -- a
seven-yard run -- ended the comeback bid.
On the game's opening drive, Texas Tech went for it on 4th-and-1 in its own
territory. A screen pass to Torres was the perfect call, resulting in a 56-
yard touchdown.
Texas A&M fumbled on its first play from scrimmage, though the hosts failed to
convert it into points thanks to a 15-yard face mask penalty. Gray's 12-yard
TD reception a little later tied the game.
Potts was picked off in Texas A&M territory on the ensuing drive, but found
Britton for a 26-yard score with 30 ticks remaining in the first frame.
Game Notes
Doege finished the game with 146 yards on 18-of-25 throws...Batch had 58 yards
on 11 carries and another 62 yards on nine grabs in the loss..Nwachukwu ended
with 79 yards on four grabs for Texas A&M, which outgained the Red Raiders,
559-520.
