GAMEDAY: Week 8 Top 25 recaps
(1) Texas 56, (11) Missouri 31
Colt McCoy threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores, as the top-ranked Texas Longhorns bested the 11th- ranked Missouri Tigers, 56-31. McCoy was efficient under center, completing a mind-boggling 29-of-32 passes for 337 yards for Texas (7-0, 3-0 Big 12), which defeated then-No. 1 Oklahoma last Saturday. Jordan Shipley led all Longhorns receivers with 89 yards on eight receptions and one score, while Chris Ogbonnaya scored two rushing touchdowns. Chase Daniel connected on 31-of-41 passes for 318 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for the Tigers (5-2, 1-2), who were beaten by Oklahoma State at home last week. Daniel also ran for a touchdown, while Chase Coffman hauled in a game-high 12 balls for 140 yards and one score.
(2) Alabama 24, Ole Miss 20
John Parker Wilson threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first half and second-ranked Alabama withstood a second-half Ole Miss rally to earn a 24-20 victory over the upset-minded Rebels at Bryant- Denny Stadium. The Crimson Tide (7-0, 4-0 SEC), coming off a bye after a lackluster 17-14 win over Kentucky, built a 21-point halftime lead and watched Ole Miss (3-4, 1-3) reel off 17 straight points in the second half. The rally fell short, though, and the Rebels fell for the 22nd time in 23 trips to Tuscaloosa. Ole Miss had one last chance to pull off its second upset of a ranked SEC foe on the road this season, taking possession down four points at its own 24 with 3:03 to play. The Rebels, who captured a 31-30 triumph at Florida on September 27, reached the Alabama 48 with a first down and just under two minutes to play. Jevan Snead was then sacked for a five-yard loss and threw incomplete before hitting Dexter McCluster with a 10-yard pass, but his fourth-down throw fell harmlessly to the turf with just over a minute to play and the Tide survived. Snead threw for 192 yards with a touchdown and an interception on 16-of-31 passing for the Rebels. Enrique Davis chipped in 70 yards on 11 carries, although 62 of those yards came on one big run early in the game. Wilson completed 16-of-25 passes for 219 yards and was intercepted once, as Alabama gave head coach Nick Saban his first-ever 7-0 start. Mark Ingram ran for 73 yards and a score on 17 carries, while Glen Coffee added 52 yards on 13 attempts in the victory.
(3) Penn State 46, Michigan 17
Evan Royster ran for 174 yards and a touchdown, as third-ranked Penn State overcame a poor first half to defeat Michigan, 46-17, for the Nittany Lions' first win over the Wolverines in their last 10 tries. The win sets up a showdown for the Big Ten conference lead between Penn State and Ohio State next Saturday at The Horseshoe, after the Buckeyes dispatched Michigan State, 45-7, earlier Saturday. Both teams head into the game as the lone undefeated teams in conference play, but the Lions have not won in Columbus since joining the Big Ten in 1993. Daryll Clark completed 18-of-31 passes for 171 yards and a score, while running for two more touchdowns for Penn State (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten), which has won its first eight games for the first time since 1999. Deon Butler caught eight throws for 105 yards, and Stephfon Green and Jordan Norwood each found the end zone once. Brandon Minor ran for 117 yards and two scores on 23 carries for Michigan (2-5, 1-2), which is in danger of having its first losing season since 1967. Steven Threet went 9-of-13 passing for 84 yards but was pulled in favor of Nick Sheridan, who connected on only 3-of-9 throws, as the Wolverines couldn't manage to score a point in the second half.
(4) Oklahoma 45, (16) Kansas 31
Sam Bradford threw for a school record 468 yards and three touchdowns on 36-of-53 completions as fourth-ranked Oklahoma outgunned 16th-ranked Kansas, 45-31. Bradford surpassed the previous high of 429 yards, set by Josh Heupel on September 25, 1999 at Louisville. Juaquin Iglesias had 12 receptions for 191 yards for the Sooners (6-1, 2-1 Big 12), who rebounded from a 45-35 setback to perennial rival Texas last week, which knocked the team from the No. 1 ranking. Quentin Chaney picked up 105 yards on six catches, while DeMarco Murray racked up 83 yards and two scores on 16 carries. Chris Brown added 92 yards and another touchdown on the ground. Todd Reesing completed 24-of-41 passes for 342 yards, two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions for the Jayhawks (5-2, 2-1), who suffered their first defeat in conference play since a memorable loss at the hands of Missouri last November when Kansas was the second-ranked school in the nation. Dezmon Briscoe had a monster game with 12 catches for 269 yards receiving, including three scores. Jake Sharp added 103 yards on the ground, with a TD, on 12 carries. After the Red River Shootout between Texas and Oklahoma featured 873 yards of total offense, Kansas and Oklahoma combined to amass 1,165 yards on Saturday.
#5 Florida, idle
(6) Southern California 69, Washington State 0
Mark Sanchez threw five touchdown passes in the first half and the sixth-ranked USC Trojans put a 69-0 thumping on the Washington State Cougars at Martin Stadium. Sanchez was 15-of-20 passing for 253 yards while Ronald Johnson and Patrick Turner grabbed a pair of scores each. The Trojans racked up 362 yards on the ground with Broderick Green leading the way with 121 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. C.J. Gable had three scores on 109 yards rushing, while Stafon Johnson gained 112 yards on just 11 carries. The Trojans (5-1, 3-1 Pac-10) dominated the line of scrimmage, outgaining WSU 625-116. USC has now routed three straight opponents since dropping its conference opener at Oregon State on September 25th, dispatching of both Oregon and Arizona State prior to Saturday's one-sided affair. Junior Kevin Lopina was charged with the task of leading an already inept offense against a Trojan defense giving up just 9.4 points per game coming in. Lopina led the Cougars to just one first down through the first two quarters and finished 6-of-9 for 28 yards with an interception. Logwone Mitz dented the line for 52 yards rushing on 19 carries and Jeshua Anderson caught four balls totaling 29 yards for Washington State (1-7, 0-5), which was coming off lopsided conference losses to both UCLA and Oregon State. Things started to unravel for the Cougars after the team lost redshirt freshman QB Marshall Lobbestael for the season with a knee injury suffered against Oregon State. Lobbestael had taken over under center for starter Gary Rogers, who suffered a cervical spine fracture against Portland State earlier this year. The Trojans will take to the road again next week, taking on Arizona, while the Cougars will get a chance to lick their wounds with an open date.
(7) Texas Tech 43, Texas A&M 25
Graham Harrell put up his customary big numbers, throwing for 450 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for two more, as the seventh-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders overcame a game Texas A&M squad, 43-25, at Kyle Field. Harrell completed 44-of-56 passes with two interceptions for the Red Raiders (7-0, 3-0 Big 12). Tramain Swindall caught seven passes for 101 yards, Detron Lewis caught nine passes for 92 yards and star wideout Michael Crabtree racked up 71 yards receiving on eight catches with two touchdowns. Baron Batch added another dynamic to the offense, averaging 6.7 yards per carry and finishing with 87 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries. Texas A&M's Jerrod Johnson, starting for the second straight week in place of Stephen McGee, completed 26-of-39 passes for 283 yards after throwing for a school-record 419 yards in last Saturday's loss to Kansas State. Mike Goodson compiled 80 total yards and ran for a touchdown, and Ryan Tannehill caught five passes for 104 yards and one touchdown for the Aggies (2-5, 0-3).
(8) Oklahoma State 34, Baylor 6
Zac Robinson threw two touchdowns as eighth- ranked Oklahoma State took an easy 34-6 victory over Baylor at Boone Pickens Stadium. Robinson went 13-for-20 with 238 yards while also adding 57 rushing yards and Dez Bryant had a career-high 11 catches for 212 yards and two touchdowns for the Cowboys (7-0, 3-0 Big 12), who will face the top-ranked Longhorns in Texas next Saturday. Kendall Hunter carried the ball 26 times for 93 yards while Keith Toston added 12 carries for 56 yards and two scores for Oklahoma State, which has an eight-game winning streak, extending to last season, for the first time since an eight-game run that spanned the 1986 and 1987 seasons. Robert Griffin went 15-for-27 with 162 yards while Wright had seven catches for 80 yards for the Bears (3-4, 1-2), who have dropped three of their last four. Griffin extended his streak of pass attempts without an interception to start a career to 155, setting a Football Bowl Subdivision record for a freshman. Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, now the Cowboys' head coach, set the former record of 138 during his freshman season in 1986.
TCU 32, (9) BYU 7
The nation's longest winning streak is over, and with it BYU's BCS hopes, as TCU ran the ninth-ranked Cougars ragged and controlled the line of scrimmage in a 32-7 rout.
(10) Georgia 24, (22) Vanderbilt 14
Knowshon Moreno broke free for 172 yards and a touchdown, and A.J. Green hauled in seven passes for 132 yards and a score, as No. 10 Georgia downed 24th-ranked Vanderbilt, 24-14, in SEC action. Caleb King added 40 yards to a rushing attack that accumulated 231 yards -- only 14 yards less than Vanderbilt's total offense. Matthew Stafford completed 13-of-23 passes for 194 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Bulldogs (6-1, 3-1 SEC). Mackenzi Adams threw for 131 yards on 16-of-32 passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Jamie Graham caught both touchdowns and Jared Hawkins added 63 yards on the ground for the Commodores (5-2, 3-2).
(12) Ohio State 45, (20) Michigan State 7
Terrelle Pryor threw for 116 yards and a touchdown, and also added 72 yards and a score on the ground to lead 12th- ranked Ohio State in a 45-7 rout of No. 20 Michigan State in a Big Ten showdown. Pryor finished 7-of-11 for the Buckeyes (7-1, 4-0 Big Ten), who have rattled off five wins since getting manhandled by USC, 35-3, on September 13. The win sets up next week's showdown at the Horseshoe with undefeated Penn State, which crushed Michigan 46-17 on Saturday. Ohio State and Penn State are the lone unbeatens in Big Ten play. Chris "Beanie" Wells added 140 yards on 31 touches and a score in the win, while Brian Robiskie had two grabs for 10 yards and a score. Ohio State's defense also forced five turnovers, while the offense failed to turn it over once. Kirk Cousins was 18-of-25 for 161 yards and a score in relief of Brian Hoyer, who left at the half with a hand injury and finished 5-of-13 for just 27 yards with an interception. Javon Ringer ran for only 67 yards on 16 carries for the Spartans (6-2, 3-1), who saw their six-game win streak come to a halt. Charlie Gantt had three catches for 32 yards and his team's only TD.
(13) LSU 24, South Carolina 17
Charles Scott scored two rushing touchdowns and Andrew Hatch threw for another as the 13th-ranked LSU Tigers survived the gritty South Carolina Gamecocks with a 24-17 victory at Williams-Brice Stadium. Scott scored the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth and racked up 61 yards on 16 carries while Keiland Williams garnered 72 yards on 15 carries. Hatch completed only 2-of-3 passes in limited action, but came up with the a game-tying TD pass late in the third quarter to Richard Dickson. Jarrett Lee started under center and hit on 16-of-26 pass attempts for 189 yards with one interception. Brandon LaFell caught four balls for 55 yards and Demetrius Byrd hauled in three balls for 65 yards for the Tigers (5-1, 3-1), who were fresh off their first loss of the season, a thorough 51-21 beating by the Florida Gators. Stephen Garcia, the redshirt freshman, made his first start for the Gamecocks and was poised in throwing for 215 yards and a score on 14-of-26 pass attempts but did toss a costly pick late in the game after LSU took the lead. Mike Davis scored on the ground but gained only 23 yards for a Gamecock running game that was held to 39 net yards rushing. Kenny McKinley had four receptions for 77 yards and Jared Cook caught five balls for 74 yards for South Carolina (6-2, 2-3), which had won four consecutive decisions since losing two of three outings to open the season. Garcia replaced ineffective starter Chris Smelley, who started last week's win over Kentucky but completed just 9-of-23 passes for 105 yards with two interceptions.
(14) Utah 49, Colorado State 16
Backup quarterback Corbin Louks rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries, leading an impressive rushing attack as 14th-ranked Utah stayed unbeaten with a 49-16 shellacking of Colorado State. Louks also completed the only pass he attempted, for a 37- yard gain, as he displayed his dual-threat abilities that make him a perfect change of pace. Matt Asiata also had two rushing touchdowns, on eight carries for 41 yards, as the Utes rolled to 327 rushing yards on the overmatched Rams defense. Brian Johnson completed 18-of-26 passes for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception for Utah (8-0, 4-0 Mountain West), which is four wins away from an undefeated regular season. Utah's two biggest challenges the rest of the way will likely come from TCU and BYU, but both of those games will also be in Salt Lake City. Billy Farris completed 19-of-33 passes for 166 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Colorado State (3-4, 1-2), which has dropped three of four. Gartrell Johnson rushed for 95 yards on 20 carries, and Dion Morton had a touchdown reception for the Rams.
(15) Boise State 27, Hawaii 7
Brandyn Thompson had three of Boise State's five interceptions, and redshirt freshman Kellen Moore threw for three scores, as the 15th-ranked Broncos remained unbeaten with a 27-7 thrashing of Hawaii.
Boston College 28, (17) Virginia Tech 23

Tyrod Taylor had 90 yards through the air, with a pick, on 12-of-27 passing, but added 110 rushing yards on 15 carries for Virginia Tech (5-2, 2-1), which saw its five-game win streak come to an end. Danny Coale led all Hokies receivers with 28 yards on four grabs.
Virginia 16, (18) North Carolina 13
Cedric Peerman scored the game-tying touchdown with 47 seconds left in regulation and stretched across the goal line with the winning TD in overtime, as Virginia stole a 16-13 decision from 18th-ranked North Carolina. Peerman, along with the entire Cavaliers offense, was held in check for most of the game, logging just 44 yards on 17 carries. Marc Verica played mistake-free football behind center, completing 24-of-38 passes for 217 yards for Virginia (4-3, 2-1 ACC), which has won three straight games to climb over .500 for the first time this season. The Tar Heels (5-2, 1-2) turned the ball over three times and watched their defense falter down the stretch. Cameron Sexton tossed two interceptions on 16-of-25 throws that netted 166 yards. Shaun Draughn registered 138 yards on the ground on 30 carries, while Hakeem Nicks caught six balls for 90 yards for Carolina, which dropped its 14th straight game in Charlottesville. Ryan Houston recorded a rushing touchdown for Carolina, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. The Tar Heels certainly missed big-play receiver and return specialist Brandon Tate, who tore ligaments in his right knee in last week's win over Notre Dame and is lost for the season.
(19) South Florida 45, Syracuse 13
Matt Grothe threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score, as 19th-ranked South Florida used a dominant second half to pull away for a 45-13 rout of Syracuse at Raymond James Stadium. South Florida built a 21-13 halftime lead, then outscored the Orange 24-0 in the second half. The USF defense held Syracuse without a first down over the final 30 minutes. Grothe completed 19-of-26 passes for 248 yards and ran for a team-high 72 yards on just 10 carries for South Florida (6-1, 1-1 Big East), which had a bye last week after dropping a 26-21 decision to Pittsburgh on October 2. Curtis Brinkley ran for 112 yards and a touchdown for Syracuse (1-6, 0-3), which has lost three in a row. The Orange were competitive in losses to Pittsburgh and West Virginia the past two games, then played the Bulls tight for 30 minutes only to watch it all fall apart after halftime.
Maryland 26, (21) Wake Forest 0
Chris Turner completed 28-of-41 passes for 321 yards and a touchdown, and Maryland knocked off another top-25 team with a 26-0 thumping of No. 21 Wake Forest. Darrius Heyward-Bey had 11 catches for 101 yards and a score, and Danny Oquendo had a 50-yard touchdown catch for the Terrapins (5-2, 2-1 ACC), who rebounded from a 31-0 loss at Virginia on October 4 with their third win over a ranked opponent this season.
