University of Central Florida, 27-7.
Javarris James totaled 65 yards and a score on 17 carries for the Hurricanes
(5-1), who have won three straight games since a 31-7 setback to Virginia
Tech. Damien Berry also had a rushing TD and Leonard Hankerson had a
touchdown reception.
Brett Hodges tallied 163 yards and a touchdown but was also intercepted on 12-
of-27 efficiency for the Knights (3-3), who have alternated wins and losses
each game this season. Brynn Harvey led all UCF rushers with 25 yards on 12
touches. Jamar Newsome had 56 receiving yards on three grabs and Rocky Ross
had a TD grab in the setback.
The Hurricanes got on the board on their second drive of the game. With about
5 1/2 minutes left, Miami took over at its own 20-yard-line. Harris hit Laron
Byrd for 12 yards on first down, then later in the drive hit Travis Benjamin
for 12 yards and Jimmy Graham for 21.
Two plays later, Hankerson hauled in a 23-yard pass in the back of the end
zone and dragged his left foot to make it 7-0 with 1:46 showing on the clock.
Matt Bosher nailed a 31-yard field goal with just under 10 minutes left in the
second stanza for a 10-point lead.
Neither team amassed any points the rest of the first half, and it remained
10-0 at the break.
After stopping UCF on its the first possession of the second half, the
visitors capitalized. A nine-yard punt gave the 'Canes the ball at their own
49, and Byrd hauled in a 32-yard pass on first down and then added a 14-yard
reception on the next play. James then ran in a five-yard score on the next
play, which made it 17-0
"We had a lot of missed opportunities, and we had our chances to make plays,"
said UCF head coach George O'Leary. "I felt we did not do a good job of taking
advantage of the opportunities we were given. It was definitely frustrating
seeing the offensive side of the ball come up short, and not being able to put
points up on the board."
The Knights, though, countered with a nine-play, 80-yard drive to close it to
10 points. Ross hauled in an eight-yard TD catch to close out the drive.
With 1:56 left in the third, Bosher nailed a 46-yard field goal to balloon the
difference to 20-7.
The Knights were stopped on the ensuing drive and Miami took over at its own
39 on a drive that bridged the final two frames. About five minutes into the
fourth, Berry ran in a three-yard score to give the Hurricanes a 20-point
cushion.
