Denton, TX (Sports Network) - David Johnson threw for 418 yards and six
touchdowns, as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane coasted past the North Texas Mean
Green, 56-26, in non-conference play at Fouts Field.
David Johnson hit on 25-of-33 pass attempts and even added a rushing
touchdown, as Tulsa (2-0) defeated North Texas for the ninth straight time.
Brennan Marion hauled in four balls for 107 yards and a score, while Charles
Clay recorded a rushing and receiving touchdown.
Giovanni Vizza paced the Mean Green (0-2) in the loss, completing 30-of-45
tosses for 247 yards and two touchdowns. Casey Fitzgerald was his primary
target with seven catches for 82 yards and a score, while Lance Dunbar led the
ground attack with 72 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
The Hurricane got things started with a 13-yard touchdown run by Clay just
over five minutes into the game.
Less than five minutes late, Tulsa struck again, as David Johnson connected
with Damaris Johnson from 18 yards out.
The Mean Green, though, countered late in the opening quarter with a Dunbar
two-yard touchdown run.
Tulsa, however, took control of the game in the second quarter, as it scored
28 consecutive points for a 42-7 lead. David Johnson got the spurt started
with a four-yard touchdown run and an 11-yard scoring strike to Clay. He then
hit Jacob Collums from five yards out for another touchdown before connecting
with Trae Johnson on a 22-yard scoring play.
Jeremy Knott nailed a 47-yard field goal on the last play of the opening half,
but North Texas went into the half down 42-10.
Midway through the third quarter, Knott struck again for the Mean Green,
hitting a 22-yard field goal attempt.
Late in the third quarter, Tulsa tacked on another touchdown, as David Johnson
and Marion combined for a 50-yard scoring strike.
Vizza threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Fitzgerald in the fourth quarter, but
the extra-point was missed and North Texas trailed 49-19.
The Hurricane continued to pour it on and it extended its advantage with a 22-
yard touchdown strike from David Johnson to A.J. Whitmore.
Vizza tossed a six-yard touchdown pass to Breece Johnson late in the game, but
it wasn't nearly enough for the Mean Green in a 56-26 setback.
Tulsa rolled up 555 yards of total offense and gained 27 first downs in the
victory.
