California at Washington State

(Saturday, September 6th)

Final Score: California 66, Washington State 3

Pullman, WA (Sports Network) - Jahvid Best generated 200 yards rushing and landed in the end zone three times for California as the Golden Bears crushed Washington State, 66-3, in Pac-10 Conference action at Martin Stadium.

In his first career start, Best carried the ball 14 times for Cal (2-0, 1-0 Pac-10), with the team finishing with a punishing 391 yards on the ground alone in the resounding win.

Cal raced out to a 21-0 lead barely six minutes into the first half as Best galloped 80 yards into the end zone on the first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Kevin Riley's 14-yard pass to Sean Young also resulted in a touchdown for the Golden Bears just 80 seconds later. A 39-yard touchdown scamper by Shane Vereen was more than enough to put WSU behind for good.

The lone scoring effort for the Cougars came courtesy of a 43-yard field goal by Nico Grasu at the 6:44 mark of the first frame. Other than that, the Washington State offense was barely heard from for the remainder of the contest.

The California defense got into the action in the second quarter when Zack Follett returned a blocked field goal 65 yards for a touchdown, boosting the lead to 28-3.

Touchdown runs of 27 and five yards from Riley and Best later in the period provided the visitors with a commanding 42-3 lead at the break.

At the 10:38 mark of the third it was Best again who ran 86 yards to push the advantage to 46 points.

A 37-yard field goal by David Seawright was followed by Tracy Slocum's six- yard TD run and a one-yard scoring burst for Brock Mansion in the fourth to close out the unsightly 63-point decision.

Although Cal ran one less offensive play than the home team, the Golden Bears still managed to generate 505 yards, compared to a mere 167 yards for the Cougars. WSU, which came up with just nine first downs, was a woeful 1-of-13 on third-down plays on the night.

The victory for Cal was the most lopsided in the 69-game history of the series with Washington State, even more drastic than the 61-0 shutout the team enjoyed in 1922.

Although the team came close, WSU managed to continue its string of scoring in consecutive game, a run that now numbers 275 games and is second in the nation behind only Michigan which has scored in 300 straight games.
