Texas A&M at New Mexico

(Saturday, September 6th)

Final Score: Texas A&M 28, New Mexico 22

Albuquerque, NM (Sports Network) - Jerrod Johnson, replacing injured quarterback Stephen McGee, threw three touchdown passes to lead the Texas A&M Aggies to a 28-22 victory over the New Mexico Lobos in non-league action at University Stadium.

Johnson paced Texas A&M (1-1) by completing 10-of-19 pass attempts for 124 yards and no interceptions after McGee sprained his shoulder on the opening drive of the contest.

Rodney Ferguson gained 135 yards on 19 carries and scored twice to lead New Mexico (0-2), but quarterback Donovan Porterie threw for just 154 yards and two costly interceptions in the losing effort.

Jordan Peterson intercepted Porterie midway through the first period of play, returning it 48 yards for the first score of the afternoon and giving Texas A&M a 7-0 lead.

The Aggies took a 14-0 lead just minutes later, as Johnson hit Jeff Fuller with a 21-yard strike.

The Lobos found the end zone late in the frame as Ferguson rumbled ahead for a 45-yard run that cut the New Mexico deficit to 14-7.

The Aggies were responsible for the only score of the second quarter, finding the end zone with under a minute left in the half on a 10-yard strike from Johnson to Fuller that gave Texas A&M a 21-7 advantage going into the break.

The Lobos added a 27-yard field goal by James Aho to their score early in the third period.

The Aggies padded their advantage early in the final period as Johnson connected with Jamie McCoy on a nine-yard completion that gave Texas A&M a 28-10 lead.

Paul Baker found the end zone following on a five-yard run late in the quarter, but a two-point conversion was intercepted, leaving the Lobos trailing 28-16.

Ferguson put the Lobos on the board once more with under a minute remaining in the contest with a one-yard plunge, but the two-point conversion attempt again failed and left UNM with the six-point setback.
