Utah State at Oregon
(Saturday, September 6th)
Final Score: (18) Oregon 66, Utah State 24
Eugene, OR (Sports Network) - LeGarrette Blount carried the ball 18 times for
a 132 yards and two touchdowns as the 18th-ranked Oregon Ducks had their way
in a 66-24 romp over the Utah State Aggies.
Andre Crenshaw and Remene Alston each rushed for a touchdown while adding 72
and 71 yards, respectively, for a ground game that accounted for 408 yards.
Justin Roper, who left last week's game with a concussion, took a majority of
the snaps under center for the Ducks (2-0), finishing with 173 yards on 13-
of-18 efficiency while adding a passing and rushing touchdown.
The Ducks' combined 688 total yards set a school record.
"It just shows how much potential we have," Roper said. "We made some mistakes
today too, some penalties, some dropped balls and I threw an interception. We
can improve on those things so if we can have this productive of an offense
with the errors, just imagine what we can do."
Diondre Borel threw for a pair of touchdowns and 157 yards on 16-of-24 throws
for Utah State (0-2), which was held to 18 first downs compared to the Ducks'
34. Otis Nelson caught a game-high seven balls for 72 yards and a TD.
Oregon's first scoring drive was prolonged by a defensive pass interference
call, and Crenshaw took advantage by punching in a three-yard TD five minutes
into the game.
After a quick Aggies possession, Oregon made it a 14-0 game as Roper found
Terence Scott in the end zone from 20 yards away, capping the 10-play, 83-yard
drive.
The Ducks kept feeding their potent backfield in the first half, and Blount
broke off a 36-yard scamper to pay dirt less than a minute into the second
quarter.
"I just waited in the backfield until I saw the hole and then broke through
and ran downfield as fast as I possibly could," Blount recalled.
The Aggies finally got something going on their next possession, as Borel led
a quick scoring strike, hooking up with Curtis Marsh on a 15-yard TD.
But Oregon answered immediately with a pair of touchdowns less than three
minutes apart. On the first march, Roper rushed for 13 yards, threw back-to-
back 26 and 33-yard completions, and had Blount dive over the goal line with a
one-yard plunge.
The Ducks didn't need that many plays on their next possession, using only
Scott's 51-yard run to take a commanding 35-7 lead.
Utah State caught then a break when Oregon's Jeremiah Masoli, who successfully
filled in for the injured Roper last week, was sacked and fumbled into the end
zone, and Antonio May recovered the loose ball for the Aggies' second TD.
The Ducks' Matt Evensen made a field goal of 39 yards before halftime, making
it 38-14, and the Ducks showed their offensive potential with three straight
touchdowns to open the second half.
Roper rushed one in from 11 yards out with nine minutes left in the third, and
Chris Harper added a 12-yard TD jaunt 2 1/2 minutes later, which was aided by
Crenshaw's 39-yard rush.
Following yet another three-and-out from the Aggies, Harper led Oregon on an
11-play, 74-yard drive, culminating in a three-yard connection with Rory
Cavaille for a 59-14 cushion.
"They wore us down, especially when we couldn't make first downs," Utah State
head coach Brent Guy said. "When your defense has to stay out there and keep
going out there, I think that wore us down. They had 88 plays, and that's a
lot of plays with the new clock rule. That tempo and their style of play got
us."
USU's Peter Caldwell hit a 33-yarder through the uprights at the 13:18 mark of
the fourth quarter, and Borel hit Nelson on a one-yard TD pass midway through
the final stanza to make the score closer than the game seemed.
Alston added more insult on a one-yard touchdown with three minutes left in
the contest.
