Utah at San Jose State

(Saturday, September 12th)

Final Score: (17) Utah 24, San Jose State 14

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Jereme Brooks and Eddie Wide both scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter, as the 17th-ranked Utah Utes extended the nation's longest win streak with a 24-14 triumph over San Jose State.

Terrance Cain completed 18-of-31 passes for 248 yards and one touchdown for the Utes (2-0), who have found the win column in 16 consecutive games. Matt Asiata rushed 20 times for 94 yards and scored from a yard out on the game's opening drive.

Jordan La Secla was 22-of-34 passing with 269 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Spartans (0-2).

San Jose State took advantage of a Asiata fumble and tied the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter when Brandon Rutley burrowed his way into the end zone for a two-yard score.

Utah had opportunities to put points on the board, but Ben Vroman couldn't covert a pair of 50-plus-yard field goals, and the Spartans' defense came up with a big goal-line stand.

Vroman missed a 36-yarder in the third quarter, but the Utes moved ahead on the third play of the final frame when Cain hit Brooks with a pass over the middle and he weaved his way down the field for a 51-yard TD.

Wide then capped an eight-play drive with a 15-yard scoring run to give Utah a 21-7 lead with nine minutes remaining.

La Secla and Marquis Avery hooked up for a one-yard TD four minutes later, but Joe Phillips split the uprights from 25 yards away in the waning seconds to cement the win.

Game Notes

Kevin Jurovich had 146 yards on eight receptions for San Jose State, while Avery made seven catches for 79 yards...Cain amassed 69 yards on the ground...The Spartans were limited to 22 yards rushing...Brooks totaled 98 yards on five grabs.
