MATCHUP   PREVIEW   RECAP   SCORE

Southeast Missouri State at Missouri

(Saturday, September 6th)

Final Score: (6) Missouri 52, Southeast Missouri State 3

Columbia, MO (Sports Network) - Chase Daniel was near perfect behind center and Derrick Washington scored three touchdowns as the sixth-ranked Missouri Tigers wiped the floor with the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks 52-3.

In less than a half of play, Daniel connected on 16-of-17 throws for 245 yards and three touchdowns, and Washington rushed for 67 yards on just eight carries for the Tigers (2-0), who followed up their win over nationally-ranked Illinois last week with another impressive showing.

Jared Perry had 60 yards receiving and a TD on three catches, while Jerrel Jackson hauled in six balls for 70 yards in the win.

"I thought we played a great ballgame tonight, exactly like we should," Daniel said. "No disrespect to SEMO, but we felt like we came out here and did some good things against them and I think that for the most part, we did."

Matt Scheible started at quarterback for the Redhawks (1-1) and hit just 5- of-13 passes for 46 yards before being pulled for Houston Lillard, who threw for 197 yards with an interception on 20-of-38 efficiency. Walter Peoples had 80 yards receiving on eight catches for SEMO, which was coming off a 35-28 overtime win over Southwest Baptist last week.

"Well, I didn't know what the score was going to be, but I knew we were going to be out-manned pretty much," Redhawks head coach Tony Samuel said. "I was more looking for the kids to play hard and execute and I thought they hung in there well. That's a great team we just played."

The Tigers scored a touchdown on their first five possessions of the game. Daniel was 3-of-4 for 54 yards on the first drive, which Washington finished off with a five-yard rush.

After the Redhawks went three-and-out, Missouri scored midway through the first quarter when Daniel hit Jeremy Maclin for the first touchdown reception of his much-anticipated sophomore campaign -- a shovel pass from three yards out. Maclin injured his ankle in last week's game, but hauled in two passes for 20 yards and added a 29-yard punt return for the victors.

SEMO then drove down the field but had to settle for a 28-yard field goal attempt from Doug Spada. The Tigers blocked the effort, however, and drove 75 yards in just four plays, culminating with a Daniel-to-Washington 28-yard hookup just before the first-quarter buzzer.

The sixth-seeded team in the country got the ball back to start the second quarter and manufactured its way down the field again, ending with another 28-yard touchdown pass from Daniel, this one to Perry.

Things got worse for the Redhawks minutes later, as Sean Weatherspoon returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown -- his second defensive touchdown in as many games.

Missouri's starters ended their day midway through the second stanza when Washington went virtually untouched up the middle for a five-yard touchdown, and the Tigers took an untouchable 42-0 lead into the break.

The Redhawks still couldn't get much going on offense in the second half despite many of Missouri's starters sitting on the sidelines. Jeff Wolfert's 43-yard field goal was the only score in the third quarter, putting Missouri up 45.

Finally, SEMO broke through when Spada booted a 31-yarder through the uprights with 11:33 left in the game, and Jimmy Jackson of Missouri had a 17-yard scamper into the end zone two minutes later to end the game's scoring.

"Our first team played really well and then we were able to get a lot of players a lot of playing time," Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel said. "And that's so valuable, we're so pleased that happened that way. There were a lot of things we did well and certainly, as always, things we need to improve."
