Troy at Florida

(Saturday, September 12th)

Final Score: (1) Florida 56, Troy 6

Gainesville, FL (Sports Network) - Tim Tebow threw for 237 yards and tied a career high with four touchdown passes on 15-of-24 efficiency and added 71 yards and a score on 13 carries, as No. 1 Florida routed Troy, 56-6, at the Swamp.

Jeffery Demps added 87 yards and a touchdown on seven touches for the Gators (2-0), who were coming off a 62-3 trouncing of Charleston Southern in last week's opener and tied a school record with their 12th straight win. Chris Rainey finished with 85 yards and a score on 12 carries, while Riley Cooper totaled 82 yards and a TD on five grabs. Brandon James and Mike Gillislee both had a TD reception. Deonte Thompson had a pair of TD grabs in the triumph.

Levi Brown tallied just 66 yards and an interception on 8-of-24 passing for the Trojans (0-2), who were coming off a 31-14 loss to Bowling Green. DuJuan Harris had 44 yards on 16 touches and Tebiarus Gill led the Troy receivers with a 24-yard catch.

"We just close our eyes and pretend we never came here," Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. "I know that's not the best thing, and it will always be in the back of our mind. But hopefully since we've seen the biggest, seen the best, we will learn from this experience."

Neither team mounted any offense in their first two possessions, and Florida got on the board midway through the opening stanza following a fumble by Harris. Tebow's six-yard TD pass to Thompson capped a four-play, 29-yard drive that gave the Gators a 7-0 lead with just over 6 1/2 minutes showing on the clock.

Sam Glusman offered a 45-yard field goal late in the first to make it 7-3 headed to the second frame.

"I'm one of those negative guys and as I was looking at our team play in the first quarter, I just kept thinking about what Troy has done to other teams," Florida head coach Urban Meyer said. "I wondered if this would be one of those games and I was just thinking how we needed to get our momentum back."

As sluggish as the Gators looked in the opening quarter, the team made up for it in the second. Tebow lost a fumble on Florida's next touch, but the home team scored on each of its next three possessions to take a commanding lead. Cooper hauled in a 36-yard TD pass, Tebow added a four-yard scoring run and Thompson grabbed a 33-yard scoring reception to make it 28-3 midway though the second.

Following another Harris fumble on Troy's next touch, Florida struck with a 24-yard touchdown dash from Demps that ballooned the difference to 35-3, which held up through the half.

Florida took the opening drive of the second half 60 yards in six plays to assume a 42-3 lead. Tebow's 32-yard post pass to James capped the drive with about 12 1/2 minutes left.

Rainey had a one-yard TD run to close out a 62-yard, seven-play drive later in the third. However, Glusman nailed a 42-yard kick to close it to 49-6 after three quarters.

John Brantley connected on a six-yard TD pass to Gillislee midway through the fourth to give Florida a 56-6 edge.

Game Notes

Tebow has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 30 straight games, which is the best streak in the country...Florida outgained Troy 663-139, including a 372-66 difference through the air...The Gators had more first downs, 32-8...These teams met for just the second time, and Florida won the only previous meeting in convincing fashion.
