Georgia at Oklahoma State
(Saturday, September 5th)
Final Score: (9) Oklahoma State 24, (13) Georgia 10
Stillwater, OK (Sports Network) - Zac Robinson threw for two touchdowns and
rushed for one as ninth-ranked Oklahoma State overcame a sluggish start to
down 13th-ranked Georgia, 24-10, in the opener for both squads at Boone
Pickens Stadium.
Robinson went 11-for-22 with 135 yards and added 39 yards on nine carries
while Dez Bryant caught both touchdowns and finished the game with three
catches for 77 yards for the Cowboys (1-0), who finished last season with a
9-4 record, including a loss to Oregon in the Holiday Bowl, after starting the
2008 campaign with a 7-0 start.
Kendall Hunter had 23 carries for 75 yards for Oklahoma State, which was
ranked in the top-10 in the AP preseason poll for the first time in school
history.
Joe Cox started under center for the departed Matthew Stafford, who was the
No. 1 pick of the Detroit Lions in the 2009 draft, and went 15-for-30 with 162
yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Bulldogs (0-1), who finished
last season 10-3, including a win over Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl.
Richard Samuel had 20 carries for 87 yards for Georgia, which has its home
opener next week against South Carolina.
Holding a three-point lead at the beginning of the third quarter, Oklahoma
State got a big boost to start the half as Perrish Cox returned the opening
kickoff 74 yards down to the Georgia 24.
Facing a 4th-and-1 at the three-yard line, Hunter carried the ball and, thanks
to a generous spot, was able to get the first down. Two plays later, Robinson
plunged into the end zone for a 17-7 lead.
The Bulldogs responded with a 13-play drive that covered 56 yards and was
capped on a 53-yard field goal from Blair Walsh that made it a 17-10 game with
just under seven minutes to play in the third.
In the fourth, Joe Cox was sacked by Shane Jarka and fumbled the ball, which
Nigel Nicholas recovered at the Georgia 32. Four plays later, and thanks to a
personal foul call on Georgia, the Cowboys took a 24-10 lead on a 12-yard
touchdown catch by Bryant from Robinson with just under eight minutes
to play.
From there, the Oklahoma State defense held Georgia to a punt and an
interception to grab the win.
Georgia started the game with the ball and the offense worked its way down the
field on a 10-play drive that covered 80 yards and was finished when Cox put
a pass between two defenders to Michael Moore in the right corner of the end
zone from four yards out for a 7-0 lead. On the third play of the drive facing
a 3rd-and-4, Cox took a quick drop and slid a pass down the right side for
A.J. Green, who raced downfield for 29 yards.
For the remainder of the quarter the teams exchanged punts, but, early in the
second quarter, Oklahoma State got a 17-yard punt return from Bryant to give
the team the ball at its own 31.
Robinson and Wilson Youman connected for 23 yards on a pass play to get the
ball into Georgia territory, but the team was unable to move any further and
had to punt the ball away.
Late in the first half, the Cowboys scored twice to take the lead into the
locker room.
Holding the ball at the Georgia 46 on a 2nd-and-7, Robinson aired the ball out
for Bryant, who made a diving catch in the end zone on a 46-yard score to tie
the game with about 2 1/2 minutes left in the half.
On Georgia's ensuing possession, Carlton Thomas took a handoff up the middle,
but he was nailed and lost the ball. Oklahoma State eventually recovered the
loose ball and had it at the Georgia six-yard-line.
However, the team had to settle for a 28-yard field goal from Dan Bailey with
just five seconds left to take a 10-7 lead into the break.
