GAMEDAY: Week 1 Top 25 recaps
(1) Georgia 45, Georgia Southern 21
Knowshon Moreno rushed for three touchdowns and Matthew Stafford passed for two scores, as top-ranked Georgia opened its season with a 45-21 triumph
over Georgia Southern. Starting the season No. 1 for the first time in school history, the Bulldogs (1-0) showed plenty of firepower continuing from a spectacular finish to the 2007 campaign. Georgia went 11-2, including a 41-10 thrashing of Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl last season. Stafford completed 13-of-21 passes for a career-high 275 yards, and Moreno, coming off a season in which he scored 14 times on 1,334 rushing yards, ran for 59 yards on Saturday. Antonio Henton connected on 10-of-18 passes for 102 yards with a TD and an interception for Georgia Southern (0-1). Lee Chapple went 9-of-18 for 86 yards through the air, and also ran for a score.
(2) Ohio State 43, Youngstown State 0
Beanie Wells ran for 111 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with an injury to his right foot, as second-ranked Ohio State rolled to a 43-0 victory over Youngstown State in the season-opener at the Horseshoe. Wells scored on a 43-yard run to cap the game's first series, but he appeared to lose his footing on a carry near the goal line in the third quarter. He had to be helped off the field and carted into the locker room before returning to the sideline in a walking boot. Todd Boeckman completed 14-of-19 passes for 187 yards with a pair of touchdowns for the Buckeyes (1-0), who are coming off a second consecutive loss in the national championship game. Ohio State has won 30 straight season openers at Ohio Stadium. Prized freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor also saw his first collegiate action for Ohio State and threw for 35 yards on 4-of-6 passing while also rushing for 52 yards on nine attempts with a score. Youngstown State (0-1), ranked 12th in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) managed just 74 yards of total offense, including minus-11 on the ground. The Buckeyes, meanwhile, racked up 251 yards rushing and 495 of total offense.
(3) Southern California 52, Virginia 7
Mark Sanchez showed no ill effects of his recent knee injury, throwing for 338 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 3 USC to a 52-7 stomping of Virginia in the season opener for both clubs. Sanchez, who dislocated his left kneecap on August 8, completed 26-of-35 passes and had one interception for the Trojans (1-0), who have won 11 straight season openers. Damian Williams had seven catches for 91 yards, and Ronald Johnson caught three balls for 78 yards, one a 49-yard touchdown for USC, which found the end zone on its first three possessions and never looked back. C.J. Gable gained 73 yards on nine carries, highlighted by a 33-yard touchdown run for the Trojans, the six-time defending Pac-10 champions who are coming off an 11-2 campaign and a Rose Bowl rout of Illinois. Sophomore Peter Lalich completed 18-of-35 passes for 155 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception for the Cavaliers (0-1), who went 9-4 last season. Mikell Simpson's seven-yard touchdown was the lone score for Virginia, which was outgained in total yardage 558-187, and managed just 32 rushing yards as a team.
(4) Oklahoma 57, Chattanooga 2
Sam Bradford completed 17-of-22 passes for 183 yards and two scores, and DeMarco Murray added 124 yards on 15 carries and two more touchdowns on the ground as fourth-ranked Oklahoma routed FCS school Chattanooga, 57-2, in the season opener for both schools. Chris Brown rushed for three touchdowns for defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma (1-0), which scored a touchdown on all seven of its first-half drives and added a safety for a 50-0 halftime edge. A thunderstorm caused a lightning delay that lasted more than an hour before the second half began. Manuel Johnson had nine catches for 120 yards and a score, and Juaquin Iglesias had 73 yards and a touchdown on four grabs, and a 69-yard kick return to set up another score for the Sooners. Chattanooga (0-1) didn't have a chance on either side of the ball against the Sooners, and the stats tell the story. Tony Pastore was 3-for-8 for 20 yards through the air, while Shaun Kermah gained 37 yards on 17 carries. The Mocs, who hail from the Southern Conference, had only one first down to Oklahoma's 27, were outgained 487-36, and went 0-for-16 on third down conversions.
(5) Florida 56, Hawaii 10
Reigning Heisman Trophy-winner Tim Tebow completed 9-of-14 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown to lead the fifth- ranked Florida Gators over the Hawaii Warriors, 56-10, in the season opener for both teams at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Brandon James scored a pair of touchdowns for the Gators (1-0), who opened their season on the earliest date in their 102-year history. Jeffrey Demps ran for 76 yards and a score as the Gators stayed unbeaten in August. Florida has outscored its opponents 286-57 in six all-time games played in the month. Greg Alexander was 11-for-21 with two interceptions and only 57 yards for the Warriors (0-1), who began the era under new head coach Greg McMackin on a sour note.
(6) Missouri 52, (20) Illinois 42
Chase Daniel connected on 26-of-45 passes for 323 yards with three touchdowns and an interception, as the sixth-ranked Missouri Tigers started their highly anticipated 2008 campaign with a convincing 52-42 win over the 20th-ranked Fighting Illini of Illinois. The win may have been costly as Heisman candidate Jeremy Maclin left the game with an apparent injury to his left ankle. Maclin showcased his talents before leaving in the second half by taking a kickoff 99 yards to pay dirt for Missouri (1-0), which is coming off a school-record 12-win season. Chase Coffman hauled in nine catches for 120 yards and a touchdown, while Derrick Washington led the Tigers' rushing attack with 130 yards and a pair of scores. Juice Williams did everything he could behind center for Illinois (0-1), throwing for a career-high 451 yards on 26-of-42 efficiency with five touchdowns and two rather costly interceptions. Will Hudson was his favorite downfield target, hitting him five times for 178 yards and two TDs, but the Illini couldn't revenge last season's heartbreaking 40-34 loss to the Tigers.
(7) LSU 41, Appalachian State 13
Charles Scott ran for a career-high 160 yards and two touchdowns, as seventh-ranked LSU opened defense of its national championship with a 41-13 rout of Appalachian State at Tiger Stadium. Appalachian State (0-1), the three-time defending champion of the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA), pulled off the shocker of 2007 last September with a season-opening win at the Big House against Michigan, but could not muster the same magic in Death Valley. LSU (1-0) captured the national championship last season with a 38-24 victory over Ohio State in the BCS title game, but this edition of the Tigers has many new faces this year -- including two players battling for time at quarterback. Andrew Hatch and Jarrett Lee both saw plenty of action behind center in the opener. Hatch completed 7-of-14 passes for 77 yards with a touchdown, while Lee connected on 6-of-10 throws for 116 yards with a pair of scores. Hatch also ran for 43 yards on seven carries. Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards, who orchestrated last year's victory over Michigan and is among the preseason favorites for the Walter Payton Award as the top player in FCS, was held in check by the stout LSU defense. He completed just 13-of-31 passes for 155 yards with a touchdown and ran for just 23 yards on 12 attempts.
(8) West Virginia 48, Villanova 21
Pat White completed 25-of-33 passes for 208 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, and rushed for 63 yards to lead eighth-ranked West Virginia over Villanova, 48-21, in the season opener for both teams. Alric Arnett hauled in four balls for 70 yards and two scores for the Mountaineers (1-0), who began the Bill Stewart era on a winning note. Stewart took over the team prior to last season's Fiesta Bowl after Rich Rodriguez decided to take the head coaching job at Michigan, and now has the position on a full-time basis. Jock Sanders also scored two touchdowns and caught eight balls for 62 yards as West Virginia won its fifth straight season opener. Antwon Young was 17-of-33 for 218 yards and two interceptions for the Wildcats (0-1), who shocked the Mountaineers with a 41-36 upset victory the last time that Villanova visited Morgantown back in 1977.
(24) Alabama 34, (9) Clemson 10
John Parker Wilson went 22-of-30 for 180 yards and two touchdowns to lead the 24th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide to an upset over the ninth-ranked Clemson Tigers, 34-10, at the Georgia Dome. Mark Ingram ran for 96 yards and Glen Coffee ran for another 90 for Alabama (1-0), who beat Colorado in the Independence Bowl to close out its 2007 season. The offense was able to control the ball for an astounding 41:13. Highly touted freshman Julio Jones caught a touchdown pass in his first collegiate game, and Nick Walker hauled in a career-high seven passes for 67 yards and a score. The Alabama defense held the Tigers rushing attack to zero yards, allowing only 188 yards of total offense for the game. Clemson's rushing duo of C.J. Spiller and James Davis combined for only 20 yards, as the Tigers failed to score an offensive touchdown. Spiller provided the only score for Clemson, returning a kickoff for a touchdown. Cullen Harper completed 20- of-34 passes for 188 yards while throwing one interception for Clemson (0-1), which finished up last season with an overtime defeat to Auburn in the Chik-Fil-A Bowl.
(10) Auburn 34, UL-Monroe 0
Chris Todd threw for 70 yards and a score on 9- of-18 passing and Robert Dunn recorded a 66-yard punt return TD as 10th-ranked Auburn pounded Louisiana-Monroe, 34-0, in the season opener for both schools at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Brad Lester and Chris Slaughter added scores for the Tigers (1-0). Ben Tate rushed 13 times for 115 yards and Michael Goggans registered a defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery. Kinsmon Lancaster completed 20-of-38 passes for 136 yards for the Warhawks (0-1). Zeek Zacharie led the receiving corps with eight catches for 61 yards.
(11) Texas 52, Florida Atlantic 10
Colt McCoy threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 103 yards and a score, as the No. 11 Texas Longhorns rolled to a 52-10 victory over Florida Atlantic in the season opener for both teams. McCoy was 24-for-29 passing and completed his first 13 passes in leading the Texas (1-0) offensive attack to 503 net yards. The junior signal- caller spread the ball around, as four different Longhorn receivers caught touchdown passes including Blaine Irby, who hauled in a game-high seven receptions for 62 yards. Vondrell McGee gained 63 yards on 12 attempts with a touchdown while Cody Johnson also found the end zone and ran for 38 yards. FAU (0-1) quarterback Rusty Smith was 15-of-31 for 253 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. The reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year led the Owls to a handful of promising drives, but two first- half turnovers derailed any momentum the team had built. Jamari Grant had four catches for 93 yards while Rob Housler caught the Owls' lone touchdown of the day, one of two receptions for 53 yards.
(12) Texas Tech 49, Eastern Washington 24
Graham Harrell completed 43-of-58 passes for 536 yards with two touchdowns and added one on the ground, as the 12th- ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders opened the season with a 49-24 triumph over the Eagles of Eastern Washington. Eric Morris and Detron Lewis each had nine receptions for 164 and 163 yards, respectively, for the Red Raiders (1-0), who are coming off a 9-4 mark last season that included a Gator Bowl victory over Virginia. Michael Crabtree, the nation's leading receiver in 2007, added nine catches for 73 yards, including a touchdown. Shannon Woods rushed for 37 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Nichols threw for 335 yards on 36-of-61 passing with a touchdown and three costly interceptions for the Eagles (0-1). Tony Davis hauled in a game-high 13 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown.
(13) Wisconsin 38, Akron 17

Hill rushed for over 200 yards for the second time in his career with 210 yards and two touchdowns to lead 13th- ranked Wisconsin over Akron, 38-17, in the season opener for both teams at Camp Randall Stadium. Allan Evridge completed 7-of-10 passes for 75 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Badgers (1-0), who won their 15th straight home game. Wisconsin outgained Akron in total yards, 479 to 297, as the Badgers took the first step towards winning their first Big Ten title since 1999. Chris Jacquemain was 22-of-36 for 227 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for the Zips (0-1), who fell to 1-17 against current members of the Big 10.
(14) Kansas 40, Florida International 10
Todd Reesing completed 37-of-52 passes for 256 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, as 14th-ranked Kansas demolished Florida International, 40-10, in both teams' season opener. Dezmon Briscoe had all three touchdown receptions as part of a nine-catch, 55-yard day for the Jayhawks (1-0), who are coming off an exceptional 2007 season. Kansas won a school-record 12 games last season, earned a share of the Big 12 North title, landed its first January Bowl game since 1968 -- beating Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl -- and earned a Top 10 ranking in the final poll. Paul McCall had a rough day under center for the Golden Panthers (0-1), as he completed just 10 of his 28 pass attempts for 73 yards, and was picked off twice. A'mod Ned ran for 42 yards on 12 attempts, while T.Y. Hilton had a punt return for a score to provide the only touchdown for FIU, which lost its 12th game in the last 13 dating back to the start of last season.
(15) Arizona State 30, Northern Arizona 13
Rudy Carpenter completed 22-of-28 passes for 388 yards and a touchdown to lead the Arizona State Sun Devils to a 30-13 victory over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. Carpenter also led the team in rushing, with 40 yards on five attempts. Michael Jones hauled in six passes for 162 yards while Kerry Taylor had 93 yards receiving and a touchdown. Josh Collins recorded 114 receiving yards and one touchdown on just three catches in the loss.
East Carolina 27, (17) Virginia Tech 22
T.J. Lee's blocked punt and subsequent 27- yard return for a touchdown with 1:52 left in the fourth quarter capped a thrilling 27-22 comeback win for East Carolina over 17th-ranked Virginia Tech in the season opener for both teams. Patrick Pinkney completed 19-of-23 passes for 211 yards with a touchdown for East Carolina (1-0), which came into the game having posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 1999 and 2000 campaigns. Sean Glennon connected on 14-of-23 passes for 139 yards and was picked off twice for the Hokies (0-1), who had won the previous six meetings against the Pirates.

Kai Forbath kicked a 42-yard field goal in the only overtime and the UCLA Bruins began the Rick Neuheisel era with a thrilling 27-24 win over the 18th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers. Kevin Craft completed 25-of-43 pass attempts for 259 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions, all in the first half, for the Bruins (1-0), who capped a disappointing 6-7 campaign in 2007 with a loss to BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl. Oregon's (1-0) Jeremiah Masoli entered the game in the second half after starting quarterback Justin Roper left the game with an apparent knee injury, and threw for 126 yards on 9-of-17 passes and two touchdowns. Roper was solid as well, hitting 7-of-11 for 114 yards with a TD and an interception. Terence Scott led all receivers with 117 yards on six receptions, including a touchdown, and the Ducks rushed for 256 yards compared to 95 for Washington. D'Andre Goodwin hauled in a game-high eight balls for 67 yards, as Washington fell to 12-36 under head coach Ty Willingham.
(22) Penn State 66, Coastal Carolina 10

Royster finished with 64 yards and a career- high three touchdowns, while Green led the ground attack with 89 yards and a pair of scores for the Nittany Lions (1-0), who have won seven straight and 16 of their last 18 season openers. Penn State, which has won 32 of its last 41 games overall, was facing Coastal Carolina for the first time. The victory was the 373rd in Joe Paterno's career, as he tied Florida State coach Bobby Bowden for the all-time lead among major college coaches. Chanticleers quarterback William Richardson passed for 131 yards on a 13-of-22 clip, while fellow signal-caller Zach MacDowall ended 5-of-9 through the air for 67 yards, including a 33-yard scoring strike to Trent Usher. Bowling Green 27, (25) Pittsburgh 17
Tyler Sheehan threw a touchdown pass and added one on the ground, and the Bowling Green defense forced three second- half Pittsburgh turnovers that allowed the Falcons to hand the 25th-ranked Panthers a 27-17 setback at Heinz Field. The Falcons (1-0) were dominated by the Panthers early on, managing just six yards of offense in the first quarter while falling behind 14-0 early in the second. However, Bowling Green scored 14 points off Pittsburgh (0-1) turnovers en route to winning its second straight season opener. Sheehan threw for 163 yards on 24-of-40 passing, while Anthony Turner's touchdown run in the third frame put the Falcons ahead for good.
