Oregon State vs. Pittsburgh
(Wednesday, December 31st)
Final Score: (24) Oregon State 3, (18) Pittsburgh 0
El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Justin Kahut's 44-yard field goal in the second
quarter proved to be the only points of the game, as 24th-ranked Oregon
State won the second-lowest scoring Sun Bowl ever, 3-0, over 18th-ranked
Pittsburgh.
Johnny Hekker totaled 10 punts for 450 yards -- including five inside
Pittsburgh's 20-yard line -- to help Oregon State (9-4) control the field
position battle. Lyle Moevao battled the strong winds and completed 21-of-42
passes for 193 yards, with two interceptions, for the Beavers, who have won
five straight bowl games since losing the 2002 Insight Bowl to Pittsburgh.
Sammie Stroughter compiled 88 yards on six receptions, while Shane Morales had
five catches for 79 yards in the win for OSU. Jeremy Francis led the Beavers'
rushing attack with 76 yards on 15 rushes in the absence of Pac-10 offensive
player of the year Jacquizz Rodgers -- who was out with a shoulder injury.
Pittsburgh quarterback Bill Stull struggled with the wind all game, hitting on
just 7-of-24 passes for 52 yards and an interception before leaving with a
hand injury in the fourth for the Panthers (9-4), who have lost three straight
bowl games since beating Oregon State in 2002. LeSean McCoy had 85 rushing
yards on 24 carries in the loss for Pitt.
Panthers punter Dave Brytus had nine kicks for 394 yards, but just one punt
landed inside the Oregon State 20-yard line.
Arizona State and Catholic played to a 0-0 tie in the 1940 Sun Bowl, which was
the lowest-scoring Sun Bowl of all-time.
The first quarter was filled with turnovers and punts, as neither team could
get on the scoreboard. Each team committed a turnover on its first possession
and punted on its next two.
After punts on the first three possessions of the second quarter, Pitt faced a
4th-and-3 on Oregon State's 37, but Stull's pass to the left was incomplete,
and the Beavers took over on downs.
Francis ran 19 yards down the right sideline to the opposing 44, and Moevao's
18-yard completion to Morales brought the Beavers to the 26. Facing a 4th-
and-11 from the 27, Kahut kicked a 44-yard field goal to open up the scoring
with 2:18 remaining in the first half.
Oregon State drove to inside the Panthers' 10-yard line in the waning seconds
of the half, but Pittsburgh made a crucial interception in the end zone to
remain only three points behind at the break.
The Beavers came the closest to scoring in the third quarter, but Kahut missed
a 37-yard field goal attempt. The teams continued to struggle against the
harsh winds, and Oregon State held its 3-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
T.J. Porter returned a punt for Pittsburgh to the opposing 42 yard-line in the
beginning of the fourth quarter, but on 3rd-and-5 from the 37, Stull was hit
and fumbled the ball. Victor Butler fell on the ball for Oregon State at his
own 42-yard line with just over 11 minutes left.
The teams continued to trade punts, and Porter brought the 19th punt of the
game back to the Pittsburgh 48-yard line with 4 1/2 minutes to play. McCoy ran
for 10 yards on the first two plays for a first down -- the team's first in
seven drives.
The Panthers faced a 4th-and-8 from the Oregon State 40, and Conor Lee's 57-
yard field goal attempt sailed wide right with 2:02 to play.
Pittsburgh got one last shot with 53 seconds to play, starting from its own
11. The Panthers got to midfield with 14 seconds left, but Butler sacked
backup QB Pat Bostick on the last play of the game to secure the win for the
Beavers.
