Tennessee plucks Wilcox to take over defense

02/04/2010 The University of Tennessee has hired Boise State defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox to run the Volunteer defense. Wilcox guided Boise State's defense for the last four seasons, over which time the Broncos compiled a 49-4 record -- including a perfect 14-0 season with a Fiesta Bowl victory over TCU. BSU finished last season 14th in both total defense and scoring defense and achieved a No. 3 ranking in turnover margin.

"It's an unbelievable opportunity," Wilcox said. "I'm really humbled to be considered and for Coach (Derek) Dooley to offer me the job. Boise State is an incredible place and I really wasn't looking to leave there. All this happened pretty fast. "But after talking with Coach Dooley and a couple of the other coaches, and getting a feel for the way he wants to model the program and a lot of the philosophies he has, I just felt like it was a great opportunity at an unbelievable place in terms of the tradition. I think it's just one of those things that was too good to pass up and I'm excited to be here."

The 33-year-old Wilcox started out as a graduate assistant for the Broncos from 2001-02 and coached the linebackers at California for three seasons (2003-05) before returning to Boise. Dooley resigned as head coach and athletics director at Louisiana Tech last month to take the head coaching position at Tennessee following Lane Kiffin's departure to USC.
