NCAA settles suit over pitcher's legal advisers

10/08/2009 The NCAA has settled a lawsuit with a former Oklahoma State pitcher who sued after he was ruled ineligible for using legal advisers in contract negotiations with a major league team.

Andrew Oliver sued the NCAA for damages after it ruled he violated a ban on using the advisers after he was drafted coming out of high school. The settlement comes just as the suit was to go before a jury in Ohio, where Oliver grew up. The deal also vacates a judge's ruling in February that threw out the NCAA rule that prohibits college baseball players from hiring advisers to negotiate contracts and ordered the NCAA to reinstate Oliver, who subsequently pitched for Oklahoma State last season.

The NCAA agreed to pay $750,000 to Oliver, who was a second-round draft pick by the Detroit Tigers.
